Passport/Visa Requirements

What are the passport and visa requirements for international travel?

If you are travelling to an international destination, you will need to prove your citizenship when you check in for your departure flight or at Canadian land and sea boarding cross points. In nearly all cases, you will also need to present approved identification when you arrive in and depart from the country you are visiting.

Depending on your citizenship, the countries you are visiting and your mode of transportation, the requirements for passports and Visas can vary. You can obtain a passport and visa from your country’s embassy.

If you are planning an international trip and do not have a passport be sure to allow enough time for your application to be processed.

Passport Is an official document which provides the identify and nationality of the person for whom it is issued:

  • Canadian passport holders, please visit the Passport Canada Web site for specific details that apply to your needs.
  • U.S. passport holders, please visit the U.S. Department of State Web site for specific details that apply to your needs.
Visa Is an endorsement stamped on your passport by foreign customs officials that allow you to visit that country:

  • U.S., click here for visa details and recommendations.

Note: Children under the age of 18 on a U.S. domestic flight, per FAA rules, do not need photo ID as long as an accompanying adult certifies their identity. For international flights all passengers will need their government issued passports.

Please note:

  • Prior to your Trip: Many countries require that you obtain your visa before you enter their country
  • On Demand: Some countries will issue you a “visa on demand” (stamped into your passport when you arrive in the country)
  • Transit Stop: If your itinerary includes a transit stop (e.g. connecting flight) in a country that is not your final destination, you may also need a transit visa regardless if you plan to exit the airport or not. While this requirement is not common, make sure you verify any transit visa requirements prior to departure.
